Virtual reality in healthcare: simulators and experiences for hospitals

We build virtual reality for hospitals, medical schools and clinical teams: simulators to rehearse procedures before the operating room, and experiences that support patients through long hospital stays. Everything runs on Meta Quest headsets, with no computer and no cables, and with PC-grade visuals. We have worked with Vall d'Hebron and Germans Trias i Pujol hospitals.

Solutions

Surgical simulatorA virtual reality surgical simulator (a 3D surgery simulator) to rehearse procedures with soft tissue that deforms and reacts realistically. Developed with Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital, it runs on standalone headsets, so every resident can practise wherever and whenever they want, without booking an operating room or a simulation centre.Laparoscopic simulatorA virtual reality laparoscopic simulator, a laparoscopic surgery simulator that fits in a headset, to practise orientation inside the cavity, camera handling and the sequence of each procedure, with no consumables and no dedicated room. It runs on Meta Quest headsets at around €350, so every resident can train wherever and whenever they want.Hospital humanizationVirtual reality in hospitals to humanise the stay: we design experiences that support patients through long hospital stays: entertainment, escape and connection with other patients, created together with the clinical team and the patients themselves. They run on standalone headsets, in rooms or shared spaces.

Applications of virtual reality in healthcare

  • Surgical simulator

Rehearse procedures with realistic soft tissue before entering the operating room.

  • Laparoscopic simulator

Orientation inside the cavity, camera handling and procedure sequence, with no consumables.

  • Clinical simulation in nursing

Nursing protocols and procedures so every student practises, not only those with a slot at the simulation centre.

  • Hospital humanization

Experiences that support patients through long hospital stays.

  • Augmented reality in healthcare

3D anatomy overlaid on the manikin or study materials, on a tablet or headset.

Who it is for

  • Surgical departments and teaching

Training for residents and consultants before they operate, with procedures they can repeat without limits.

Resident training · Rare procedures · Case preparation

  • Clinical simulation centres

Portable simulators that extend the centre without more space or equipment.

Surgical simulation · Clinical protocols · Self-directed practice

  • Innovation units

Virtual reality pilots with measurable results, ready to scale to other departments.

    Pilots · Co-funded projects · Digital health

  • Patient experience and paediatrics

Experiences that make long stays easier, especially for children and teenagers.

Teenage patients · Long stays · Shared spaces

  • Medical and nursing schools

Clinical practice and 3D anatomy for every student, not only those with a slot at the simulation centre.

3D anatomy · Clinical skills · Practical assessment

  • Medtech companies

Medical device simulators to train clinicians on a new device or technique, and to show it at conferences without shipping it.

Medical device simulators · Demonstrations · Conferences

What it solves

  • Residents see few cases of each procedure

In the simulator they can repeat the procedure as often as they need, including rare ones.

  • Learning on real patients carries risk

Mistakes happen in the virtual environment, with no consequences, before entering the operating room.

  • Operating room and trainer time is scarce

Trainees practise on their own and trainers focus on feedback and assessment.

  • Physical simulators are expensive and take up space

Standalone headsets at around €350 go to any room, ward or classroom, with no computers or installation.

  • Long stays weigh on patients

Virtual reality experiences designed with the clinical team to entertain, offer an escape and keep patients company.

Case studies

First you see it. Then we build it.

  1. 01

    On-site demo

We bring the headsets so you can try it first-hand.

  2. 02

    Pilot or prototype

We validate the idea with real users before scaling.

  3. 03

    Development

We build the experience to fit, with PC-grade visuals.

  4. 04

    Rollout and maintenance

We set up the headsets, train your team and keep it running.

FAQ: virtual reality in healthcare

How is virtual reality used in healthcare?

The most common uses are training and clinical simulation (rehearsing procedures without risk), preparing interventions with 3D models of the patient, and improving the hospital experience with patient-facing experiences.

What does a hospital need to get started?

Just Meta Quest 3 headsets, at around €350 each. No computers, cables or dedicated room. We start with a demo at the hospital.

Does virtual reality replace real practice?

No, it complements it: trainees arrive at real practice with the procedure already rehearsed, and can repeat as often as needed what they only see occasionally in theatre.

How is a project like this funded?

Besides the hospital's own budget, many projects are co-funded by foundations, sponsors or several centres together. The Barça digital universe, for example, was built with Fundació Barça.

What are the benefits of virtual reality in healthcare?

It allows practice with no risk to patients, repeating rare procedures as often as needed, training more people with less operating room and trainer time, and taking simulation to any room with a standalone headset.

Is it high-fidelity clinical simulation?

Visually and procedurally, yes: realistic environment, anatomy and tissue, at full scale. Headsets do not reproduce the physical resistance of instruments, so fine dexterity is combined with manikins or box trainers.

Can it be used for clinical simulation in nursing?

Yes. The simulators work the same in a nursing or medical school as in a hospital, and are adapted to each centre's protocols and curriculum.
